Search for “standard stamp size” and you get a different answer depending on where you live. A German office manager orders a 58 × 22 mm rectangle without thinking about it. A Russian accountant assumes a 40 mm circle. An Indonesian business owner asks for a stempel bulat of 4 cm, and an Indian company secretary orders a round seal and an “Authorised Signatory” rectangle.
None of them are wrong. Company stamp sizes are mostly local conventions, shaped by which self-inking models are sold locally, what banks expect, and what the previous stamp looked like. This guide puts those conventions side by side in mm, cm, and inches, maps common self-inking models to their real dimensions, and shows how to set an exact size in our free Stamp Studio.
Reference, not legal advice: Most countries don’t fix company stamp sizes in law. Where a size is regulated (notary seals, state seals, Chinese company chops), the official rule always wins. Check with your registry, bank, or stamp maker before ordering anything formal.
Why Stamp Sizes Differ by Country
Three things drive the difference:
- What the stamp is for. In countries where stamps carry legal or banking weight (Russia, India, Indonesia, much of Africa and the Gulf), the company stamp is a round seal with the full legal name, registration number, and city. It needs a 38–42 mm circle to fit all that text. In countries where stamps are mostly practical (Germany, the US, the UK), the “company stamp” is a rectangular address block.
- Which stamp hardware is sold locally. Self-inking stamps from manufacturers like Trodat and Colop come in fixed plate sizes, and those sizes become the national “standard” through sheer availability. Germany’s 58 × 22 mm Firmenstempel is really the size of the most popular self-inking model.
- Regulation, where it exists. A few countries do regulate certain seals: Russia’s GOST R 51511-2001 for official seals bearing the state coat of arms, China’s police-registered company chops, and US state rules for notary seals. Ordinary company stamps usually sit outside these rules.
That’s why the localized versions of our stamp size reference get searched in every language: Stempelgrößen, medidas de sellos, ukuran stempel, and размер печати are all asking the same question with a different local answer.
Country Reference Table
These are the sizes you’ll most often see on company documents in each country. “cm” is included because many local searches and stamp shops quote sizes that way.
| Country | Typical round company stamp | Common rectangular sizes | What’s usually on it |
|---|---|---|---|
| India | 38–40 mm (3.8–4 cm) | 58 × 22 mm, 60 × 40 mm, 75 × 38 mm | “For [Name] Pvt. Ltd.” + “Authorised Signatory”; GSTIN on invoice stamps |
| Germany | Rare outside public bodies; 40–45 mm when used | 47 × 18 mm, 58 × 22 mm, 70 × 25 mm | Firm name with legal form (GmbH), address, phone, web |
| Russia | 40 mm (38–42 mm common) | 58 × 22 mm, 60 × 40 mm (штамп) | Full legal name with ООО / АО, OGRN, INN, city |
| Indonesia | 35–40 mm (3.5–4 cm) | 60 × 40 mm; oval ~50 × 35 mm | PT / CV name, city, often a logo |
| Mexico | 40–45 mm | 47 × 18 mm, 58 × 22 mm | Razón social, RFC, address |
| Brazil | 40 mm (less common) | 58 × 22 mm, 60 × 40 mm (carimbo CNPJ) | Company name, CNPJ number, address |
| Nigeria | 38–42 mm | 58 × 22 mm, 60 × 40 mm | Company name, RC number, address |
| Philippines | 38–45 mm | 58 × 22 mm, 60 × 40 mm (receiving stamps) | Registered name, address, TIN |
| UAE | 40–45 mm, often bilingual | Oval ~50 × 35 mm | Name in English and Arabic, trade licence no., emirate |
| United States | 1-5/8 in (41 mm) embosser; 38–42 mm ink stamp | 1 × 2.5 in (25 × 64 mm) | Corporate name, state, year of incorporation |
| China | 40–42 mm red chop with star | Not used as a substitute | Full registered Chinese name (licensed engravers only) |
A few notes that matter more than the numbers:
- Russia: Federal Law No. 82-FZ (April 2015) made seals optional for LLCs and JSCs, but many companies kept them because counterparties and banks still ask. If your company’s charter says it has a seal, it must use it.
- India: the Companies (Amendment) Act 2015 made the common seal optional, yet round and signatory stamps remain standard on invoices, bank forms, and HR letters.
- Indonesia: the company stamp is usually placed partly over the signature, and over the meterai (duty stamp) where one is required. A 35–40 mm circle covers both without hiding the signature.
- Germany: no law requires a Firmenstempel. If you do use one, the business letter rules for your legal form (e.g., GmbH details) apply to letterheads, not to the stamp.
- China: an official company chop is a registered legal instrument. A design tool can’t produce a valid one, and you shouldn’t try.
For what goes inside the stamp (legal name, registration number, tax ID) and how round, rectangular, and oval formats differ, see our company stamp format guide.
Responsible use: Only create a stamp for a company you own or are authorised to represent. Copying another business’s stamp is forgery almost everywhere.
Self-Inking Model Sizes Mapped to mm
When a stamp shop says “Printy 4913” or “Printer 40”, it is quoting a plate size. Here are the common ones (impression size; check the manufacturer’s spec sheet before ordering, since some variants differ slightly).
Rectangular
| Model (Trodat Printy / Colop Printer) | Impression size | In cm | Typical lines of text |
|---|---|---|---|
| Printy 4911 / Printer 20 | 38 × 14 mm | 3.8 × 1.4 cm | 3 |
| Printy 4912 / Printer 30 | 47 × 18 mm | 4.7 × 1.8 cm | 4 |
| Printy 4913 / Printer 40 | 58 × 22 mm (Colop: 59 × 23 mm) | 5.8 × 2.2 cm | 5 |
| Printy 4915 / Printer 50 | 70 × 25 mm (Colop: 69 × 30 mm) | 7 × 2.5 cm | 5–6 |
| Printy 4927 | 60 × 40 mm | 6 × 4 cm | 7–8 |
| Printy 4926 / Printer 60 | 75 × 38 mm (Colop: 76 × 37 mm) | 7.5 × 3.8 cm | 7–8 |
Round
| Diameter | In cm | In inches | Common use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 mm | 3 cm | 1.18 in | Small initials or monogram stamps |
| 38 mm | 3.8 cm | 1.50 in | Compact company and professional stamps |
| 40 mm | 4 cm | 1.57 in | The global default for company seals |
| 42 mm | 4.2 cm | 1.65 in | Company seals with long names; bank stamps |
| 45 mm | 4.5 cm | 1.77 in | Seals with logos or bilingual text |
| 50 mm | 5 cm | 1.97 in | Large seals, institutions, crests |
The rule of thumb: the 58 × 22 mm rectangle and the 40 mm circle cover most company stamps in most countries. Only move up when a long legal name, a second language, or a tax ID won’t fit at a readable size. Our standard rubber stamp sizes guide covers oval and square formats too.
Converting mm → px at 300 / 1200 DPI
A digital stamp needs enough pixels to look sharp at its real size. The formula:
pixels = (mm ÷ 25.4) × DPI
| Stamp size | At 300 DPI | At 600 DPI | At 1200 DPI |
|---|---|---|---|
| 38 mm round | 449 px | 898 px | 1795 px |
| 40 mm round | 472 px | 945 px | 1890 px |
| 42 mm round | 496 px | 992 px | 1984 px |
| 47 × 18 mm | 555 × 213 px | 1110 × 425 px | 2220 × 850 px |
| 58 × 22 mm | 685 × 260 px | 1370 × 520 px | 2740 × 1039 px |
| 60 × 40 mm | 709 × 472 px | 1417 × 945 px | 2835 × 1890 px |
| 75 × 38 mm | 886 × 449 px | 1772 × 898 px | 3543 × 1795 px |
Use 300 DPI for documents that stay on screen or go through an office printer. Use 1200 DPI (or a vector SVG) when the stamp will be scanned, enlarged, or sent to a stamp maker. Our SVG vs PNG vs PDF formats guide explains which file to send where.
Pro Tip: Stamp makers outside your country may quote sizes in inches. 1 in = 25.4 mm, so a “1.5 inch” round stamp is 38 mm and a “1-5/8 inch” seal is 41 mm. Always confirm in millimeters before paying.
How to Set Exact Size in the Stamp Studio
- Open the Stamp Studio or start from a ready-made design in the Business & Corporate templates.
- Set the dimensions in millimeters. In the right-hand panel, use Stamp Dimensions (mm) to type the width and height, or click a standard preset: 38 mm, 40 mm, 42 mm, 50 mm, or 65 × 25 mm. For a 58 × 22 mm Firmenstempel or a 60 × 40 mm signatory stamp, type the numbers directly.
- Fit your text. Add the legal name on the outer arc (round) or top line (rectangular). If it crowds the ring, reduce letter spacing or remove an inner ring before shrinking the font.
- Check the smallest text. Keep it at about 2 mm cap height or larger so registration and tax numbers survive photocopying.
- Export. Choose a transparent PNG at 4x Print or 6x Ultra for documents, or SVG for a stamp maker. The SVG has no fixed resolution, so it stays sharp at any size.
- Stamp your documents. Open a PDF or Word file in the PDF & Word Stamper and place the stamp at true scale. Files stay in your browser.

Final Thoughts
There is no single “standard” company stamp size, but the answers cluster tightly. Round company seals sit between 38 and 42 mm almost everywhere, with 40 mm (4 cm) as the safe default. Rectangular company stamps follow the self-inking sizes, with 58 × 22 mm and 60 × 40 mm the most common. Match your local convention, set the size in millimeters, and export at a resolution that survives printing and scanning.
